REGAN (Timothy, Mary (SMITH)) Middletown - approx. 1858/59-1877/78.
From: - Hugh D. Maloney (Oct 23, 1998)
Timothy Regan (born Timothy O'Regan)emigrated to Ohio from County Cork, Ireland sometime before late-1851. He first settled in Dayton, where he worked for a time in the 1850s as a carpenter. He was granted US citizenship in 1855. In Middletown on May 14, 1856, he married the former Miss Mary Smith, a recent emigre from County Cavan. Mary's brother, Rev. (Terence) Joseph Smith, a Roman Catholic priest, officiated at the ceremony, which probably was conducted at Holy Trinity Church, where Smith was apparently serving at that time as Assistant Pastor.
The O'Regans lived for a time on 2nd & St. Clair Streets in Dayton, where one and perhaps two children were born. The O'Regans dropped the 'O' prefix to their surname sometime in 1858-59, and at about the same time moved to Middletown, where 7 other Regan children came along.
Timothy Regan served during the Civil as a first lieutenant in Captain Daniel Bowman's Company (a Butler County Company later mustered in as Company D) of the 93rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry and subsequently as Captain of Company I of the 93rd.
He was severely wounded with a gunshot to the hip on September 19, 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga and was carried from the field by Private William Tillson (Tilson), who'd been a papermaker in Middletown before the war. Family legend (backed to some extent by official records) tells that Regan, unable to walk, guided Tilson (who'd suffered a scalp wound and was very likely temporarily blinded) to the rear. Regan was subsequently hospitalized in Chattanooga before he was removed North to recover from his wound at his home in Middletown. He was never again found fit for field duty, but served subsequently with the US Military Railroads as a conductor.
In postwar years (1867-69), Regan served as an elected trustee in the incorporated Village of Middletown. He was also appointed to the Railway Mail Service (in 1865 or 1866) and served as a railway mail clerk almost until the time of his death on September 8, 1900. The Regans lived in Middletown until sometime around 1877 or 1878, when they removed to Dayton.
I have written a lengthy history entitled "Captain Regan of the 93rd Ohio" (Copyright 1998, by the author), detailing Regan's military service and offering many facts of interest to Regan descendants and students of the 93rd Ohio. I'd be happy to answer any inquiries in that regard. - Hugh D. Maloney
